Richardson Journey to Success
History of the Richardson Journey To Success, RJTS, Program at Richardson Primary School
How the RJTS Program Evolved at RPS ?
The RJTS program evolved from the perceived needs of the students at RPS. In past years, staff at RPS recognised a strong need for students to be taught social skills and strategies, such as, how to build positive relationships and resolve conflicts. At one stage, approximately 10% of the school’s students were referred for inappropriate behaviour in class or on the playground on a daily basis. These students attended the “Life Skills” room to resolve issues.
Other strategies and programs have also been used to address student behaviour management issues over the years. Some students were supported with specific lessons on anger-management. Many classes had focus lessons to discuss bullying or other issues. One year a special class was formed to cater for a group of students who were perceived as needing a structured daily routine, with explicit lessons in social skills and support for their behavioural issues. At times programs have been implemented which focused on engaging students in life skills and motivating activities, while teaching social skills and strategies.
